Rovescio: Denominazione in parole (UN CENT) all'interno della corona. Legenda: STATI UNITI D'AMERICA

Di fronte a una reazione pubblica più negativa, i centesimi della corona furono ridisegnati nel 1835 dal nuovo capo incisore Christian Gobrecht. Quest'ultima importante modifica alla moneta ha aggiornato il dritto conferendo alla Libertà un aspetto più snello e giovanile. Piccole modifiche continuarono fino al 1843 e il design del 1843 prevalse fino alla fine della coniazione nel 1857. Circa 11 anni dopo l'interruzione della produzione del centesimo grande, un impiegato della zecca coniò diversi centesimi grandi datati 1868, quasi certamente in vendita come rarità istantanea ai numismatici. Si sa che sopravvivono meno di una dozzina di queste emissioni non ufficiali, coniate sia in bronzo che in rame-nichel.
