Commemorative issue Federal State of Saarland Obverse The coin features the Ludwigskirche, a symbol of Saarbrücken, the capital of the Saarland. It shows the distinctive east facade and bell tower of the church, with the word ‘SAARLAND’ and ‘G’, a mint mark, underneath. It was designed by Friedrich Brenner, whose initials appear to the right of the image. The year of mintage, 2009, the 12 stars of the European Union and the words ‘BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND’ are depicted on the outer ring. Lettering: SAARLAND J FB BUNDESREPUBLIK DEUTSCHLAND 2009 Translation: Saarland Federal Republic of Germany 2009 Engraver: Friedrich Brenner Reverse A map, next to the facial value, shows the European continent without borders. Lettering: 2 EURO LL Engraver: Luc Luycx Luc Luycx is the designer of the common side of the euro coins. Luycx is a computer engineer, and medallist living in Dendermonde, Belgium, and has worked for the Royal Belgian Mint for 15 years. He designed the euro coins in 1996.
