Kushan Empire. Kanishka I, AD 127/8-152. Gold Dinar (7.96 g). Diademed and crowned figure left of king standing over altar, shoulder aflame, and holding goad and spear. Reverse: Manaobago enthroned facing, head right, holding wheel and ring; crescent moon behind shoulders. MK 59.1; Mitchiner --; Fr.--. Extremely Fine and extremely rare. Kanishka promoted Buddhism and depicted the Buddha on his gold and bronze coinage, including a gold type which shows the Buddha standing and the legend BoDdo. The wheel (cakra) is a symbol representing the Buddhist cyclical view of life, wherein death does not terminate life and commence an equally linear afterlife, but both follows and precedes life; a transitional stage terminating in rebirth. Hence the wheel, commonly called "the wheel of life" or "the wheel of becoming," symbolizes eternal life achieved through reincarnation.
