During the rule of this bishop, all Protestants were expelled from the city (1731). Over 21,000 Protestants were thrown out of the city in the middle of winter, and were forced to march through the Alps to safety. Their plight was so desperate, that even many Catholics comdemned the action of Leopold Anton. Goethe wrote about their misery in “Hermann and Dorothea”.
