8 Escudos, 1725/4-M. Louis I (1724). NGC AU-55.
Fr-11; KM-40; Cal-type-1#1; TF-538/9. The reign of Louis I is a sad story, marked as one of the shortest rules in history. His father Philip V abdicated in his favor January 14, 1724. His rule lasted for just over 7 months before his death, having succumbed to small pox. Upon his death, Philip V returned to the throne and continued to rule as king until his own death in 1746. All coinage minted in the name of Louis I by the mint of Lima Peru is dated 1725. Contemporary methods of transportation and communication were slow which meant that not only was the news of the new king postponed causing the coinage to be produced in 1725, but news of his death was equally postponed. Hence production for the coinage of Louis I did not commence until 1725. Currently the finest certified Louis I 8 Escudos by NGC. Clear date, bold strike with much original luster.
