Magnificent Transylvania 10 Ducat Struck at Alba Julia the Year of the Invasion of Poland
Fr-391; KM-305; Huszar-526; Resch-115. George Rakoczi II succeeded his father George Rakoczi I in October of 1648. Shortly after his rise to power, he began devising plans to make his father’s ambitions of conquering Poland a reality. Aligning himself with Charles X Gustav of Sweden, in 1657 he led a campaign across the Carpathian Mountains entering Poland near the city of Krosno. Although Rakoczi was successful in capturing and destroying the towns of Dukla, Lesko and Sanok, he failed to capture many other strategically important cities. His army became known for committing atrocities such as the looting and razing of cities. In March of 1657, he met with Swedish allies in the controlled city of Krakow; however, his Swedish alliance was cut short in May. News of the Dano-Swedish War reached Charles X Gustav, and the Swedish king decided to march towards Pomerania. Shortly after, Polish forces began to organize a “revenge invasion” of the then vulnerable Transylvania, using similar tactics of looting and destruction. Eventually Rakoczi was defeated and returned to Transylvania; however, the Sultan of Turkey had nominated Archatius Barcsai in his place. In short order, fighting ensued between the two and Rakoczi was deposed. During the conflict he suffered severe wounds from which he later died.This magnificent piece was struck at Alba Julia, the capital of Transylvania. The city was also known as Karlsburg in 1657, the same year Rakoczi began his campaign in Poland. An impressive crown-sized gold piece that radiates importance. Well struck and attractive with problem free surfaces. Showing only light contact marks from circulation.
