1919. PCGS graded MS-67 Full Bands. CAC Approved. A superb satin mint gem. Free from blemishes and creamy-white in appearance. Struck with exactitude by the dies, a rare occurrence with this date, even though Philadelphia-made Mercury dimes tended to be of more consistent high quality than products from Denver and San Francisco. One of the top specimens graded. Pop 10; 1 finer in 67+. (PCGS # 4923) In "The Silver Coinage of 1916 - An Artistic Renaissance," Thomas S. LaMarre, in referring to the new designs introduced in 1916, wrote, "the Winged Liberty Head dime was first to appear, entering circulation in the latter part of October 1916. 'The design of the dime, owing to the smallness of the coin, has been held quite simple, Mint Director F.J.H. von Engelken said. 'The obverse shows a head of Liberty with winged cap. The head is firm and simple in form; the profile forceful. The reverse shows a design of the bundle of rods, with battle-ax, known as Fasces, and symbolical of unity, wherein lies the Nation's strength.
