1863. PCGS graded MS-64 PQ. CAC Approved. Lovely golden toning. Beaming with originality. Indian cent production increased rapidly in 1862-64. Although the Philadelphia Mint struck very few small silver coins due to hoarding of silver, it is not quite accurate to say that silver did not circulate at all during the Civil War and afterward. The general rule was that all prices charged to consumers were in greenbacks (or shinplasters), but small silver coins could be given paper values for transactions. For example, during this inflationary period, depending upon the premium, a half dollar might have passed for anywhere from sixty to ninety cents. Today, although silver no longer circulates, any old silver half dollar commands sometimes 10x, 15x, or even 20x face value when converted into Federal Reserve currency (dollar units of account) (PCGS # 2067) .
