1851 C-1 R1 F15. Underweight Planchet and Weakly Struck. Slightly sharper in those areas that were reasonably well struck, but this piece was lightly cleaned and there are a few light hairline scratches in the field near star 12. Glossy chocolate and steel brown with lighter brown toning in protected areas. The planchet is a bit thin and underweight, 81.5 grains versus the 84-grain standard. Walter Breen described this type of error as being the result of the planchet strip rollers being "set too close together." The soft strike could reasonably be attributed to the thin underweight planchet, and this type of error has been seen on several examples of 1851 half cents.
