MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1733-MoF. Philip V (1700-46). NGC EF Details--Excessive Surface Hairlines.
KM-103; Cal-type-146#775; Gil-M-8-2; FC-2a. Small crown, standard dies for type. The 1733-Mo single letter F assayer should be considered quite scarce to RARE. A large majority of the coins that appear on the market are recovered from a single find at Coffin"s Patch from the 1733 Plate Fleet. A number of these rare coins were found fused together in clumps. Many of the coins in these clumps were still in original stacks completed fused together with marine encrustation and coral. Many pieces were sitting on top of one another, protecting them from the ocean environment. The group offered here presents a good opportunity for the collector to acquire one of these rare pieces. It is interesting to note that all the 1733 pillar coinage found in these clumps bear the single letter “F” assayer’s mark. Light porosity from salt water immersion. Toned.
Pedigree: From the David Gray Collection. Ex: 1733 Fleet.
