Caracalla AR Drachm, Petra Caracalla (198-217 AD). AR Drachm (19 mm, 3.11 g), Petra, Decapolis. C. 211-212. Obv. M AY ANTΩ CEB, laureate head right. Rev. ΔΗΜΑΡЄΞ YΠAΤ, Tyche, turreted, standing left, holding baetyl in extended right hand and cradling trophy in left arm. Butcher, "Two Notes on Syrian Silver of the Third Century AD," NumChron 1989, pg. 171; CNG MBS 63 (2003), 1080. Extremely rare, possibly only the sixth specimen known. Very fine. The circumstances under which this and the following coin have been produced remain unclear, but they can be safely dated to 211-212 AD since the issue includes coins of Geta Augustus but lacks any of Septimius Severus. It is possible that they were part of an adhoc local military need of silver, which, judging by the extreme rarity of the coins today, must have quickly been overcome.
