Commemorative issue State of Lower Saxony Obverse The desigh shows the Church of St. Michael in Hildesheim, Lower Saxony which has been on the Unesco World Cultural Heritage list since 1985. At the top the year of issuance ‘2014’ and at the left the mintmark (A, D, F, G, J). At the bottom, the inscription ‘NIEDERSACHSEN’ and underneath the indication of the issuing country ‘D’. At the top right, the initials of the engraver OE (Ott Erich). The coin’s outer ring depicts the 12 stars of the European flag. Lettering: 2014 Œ D Niedersachsen D Translation: 2014 Œ D Niedersachsen D Engraver: Erich Ott Erich Ott is a German sculptor, engraver, and designer. He is best known for his design of numerous German commemorative coins and designed the German Deutsche Mark coins in 1977, the 5 DM coin, commemorating the 200th anniversary of Carl Friedrich Gauss. Reverse A map, next to the facial value, shows the European continent without borders. Lettering: 2 EURO LL Engraver: Luc Luycx Luc Luycx is the designer of the common side of the euro coins. Luycx is a computer engineer, and medallist living in Dendermonde, Belgium, and has worked for the Royal Belgian Mint for 15 years. He designed the euro coins in 1996.
