Commemorative issue First Spouse series – Thomas Jefferson’s Liberty Obverse Image of Liberty originally used on the Draped Bust Half Cent, produced between 1800 and 1808. Lettering: LIBERTY 3RD PRESIDENCY 1801-1809 W IN GOD WE TRUST-2007 Engraver: Robert Scot , Phebe Hemphill Robert Scot was the first Chief Engraver of the United States Mint from the inception of the United States Mint in 1793 until his death in 1823. He was succeeded by William Kneass. Scot also designed the popular and rare Flowing Hair dollar coinage along with the Liberty Cap half cent. Scot is perhaps best known for his design, the Draped Bust, which was used on many silver and copper coins. Phebe Hemphill is an American sculptor who works for the United States Mint. She has been called “one of the preeminent coin artists, sculptors, and engravers of our time.” Reverse Thomas Jefferson’s monument, which is located on the grounds of his estate in Monticello.
