Kyrenaica, Barke, c. 480-460 BC. AR Obol of the Asiatic Series (0.68 g). Silphium plant. Reverse: Head of Zeus Ammon right within dotted square; around, "BAPK". Cf. BMC 18 (hemidrachm); cf. SNG Cop 1181 (no ethnic, attributed to Kyrene); Rosen --. Seemingly unpublished. Choice Very Fine. This fractional piece depicts the silphium plant, extinct for nearly 1500 years, which was a form of assafoetida.
