After the murder of Pompey Magnus in Egypt, Pompey the Younger and his brother Sextus joined Metellus Scipio, Cato, and the other senators who remained opposed to Caesar in Africa. Following their defeat at Thapsus, the Pompey brothers fled to the Balearic Islands, where, with Labienus, they crossed into Hispania to raise another army, which was devastated by Caesar at Munda.
