1 Cent    (sold for $3400.0)

1803 S-261 R2 VF25. Double Struck with Rotation, Obverse Brockage Maker. Sharpness EF40 but covered with extremely fine roughness under a mostly glossy dark steel and olive brown patina. No marks or verdigris. E-MDS, Breen state III, with a die crack arcing up between the 8 and 0 in the date passing through the shoulder, curls, and ribbon into the field left of the lower ribbon end. The reverse was clearly double struck with a counterclockwise rotation of about a millimeter. The doubling covers all of the legend and devices and it is obvious to the unaided eye. However, the obverse displays no evidence of doubling. Instead it shows subtle swelling and waviness that is associated with having been struck against a blank planchet following the initial strike, thereby creating an obverse brockage on the second planchet. This happens when a struck cent fails to eject and a new blank planchet is inserted into the press. The end result is two impressive mint errors: a double struck brockage maker and a brockage. A sharp example of this very rare type of mint error. Estimated Value $800-UP. Categories: Cents
