1918-S. PCGS graded MS-65 PQ. CAC Approved. Lovely golden toning. Better than average strike. The dies on both sides seem to have been in better shape than usual, possibly newer than most where the design begins to blur or soften. A sparkling and lustrous golden toned gem, one with satiny beauty, with fully defined design features, and possessing a burst of varying hues in the surface color and luster on both sides. Far from the normal example of this elusive '18-S issue is the respectable amount of detail throughout with no appreciable weakness on the hair braid or buffalo's head and shoulder area. Pop 32; 1 finer in 66 (PCGS # 3940) Note: The lack of high-grade 1918-S Buffalo nickels is the product of a conspiracy of factors. Minted during the closing year of the Great War, the 1918-S was a casualty of economic actions, in more ways than one. To conserve dies and prolong their life, and to ramp up production with as little machine down time as possible, the dies were often allowed to be worked beyond their set limits, and were also adjusted too far apart in the press to deliver strong blows to the hard nickel-copper alloy coins.
