1 Cent    (Vendue pour $5500.0)

1922 Die Pair 2. Numistrust graded MS-63 Red & Brown. Our grade is MS60BN. With the exception of these few million pieces hastily struck during January and February of 1922, the Denver Mint coined no other cents from the end of 1920 through most of 1924. A short but severe economic downturn following the end of World War I, which weakened demand for additional cents after the massive minting of 1916-20. The reason for this anomalous coinage is still debated; the Mint Director's Report does nothing more than acknowledge it, although the Denver Mint was shown to have on hand at the end of the fiscal year (June 30, 1922) some 20,250,700 cents! It was not until the late 1920s that the first 1922 No D Cents were reported in hobby publications of the day. It seems these early reports failed to reach a wide circulation because new "discoveries" were still being made in The Numismatist into the late 1930s. All die pairs of this 20th century error are scarce-to-rare in today's market. Mint State survivors of Die Pair 2 definitely fall into the latter category, particularly if they possess the surfaces of the present example. Both sides are somewhat glossy in texture with dominant medium brown toning. The reverse is the one side that is sharply struck, as befits the die pair, and even the obverse is detailed enough in overall definition to make out the legends. With no singular blemishes to mention, this coin is sure to see spirited bidding from advanced Lincoln Cent specialists. Estimated Value $7,000 - 7,500. Categories:
