The independent province of Rio de la Plata was an outgrowth of the Spanish province of the same name. Its capital was Buenos Aires, and its name derives from the important estuary of Rio de la Plata that empties into the Atlantic Ocean. The estuary is formed by the combination of the Uruguay and Parana Rivers. It forms part of the border between Argentina and Uruguay, and is the largest estuary in the world.
