1893. PCGS graded Proof 68 Cameo PQ. CAC Approved. A relatively small mintage of 792 proof Barber half dollars was completed in 1893, the second year of the design. Walter Breen, Encyclopedia of U.S. Proof Coinage, opines that this date is somewhat scarcer than the 1892, but less popular with collectors because of the first-year-of-issue effect. Examples in Proof 68 condition are virtually unknown, and this specimen is the single finest certified in the Cameo designation by PCGS. The present coin is a stunning Cameo example, with spectacular blue-green, gold, deep red, and violet patina over both sides that deepens toward the border areas. The pristine surfaces are brightly reflective under the toning, and the field-device contrast is profound, especially as the coin turns under a light. The strike is razor-sharp in most areas, but typical softness appears at the juncture of the shield and eagle's wing. An important opportunity for the Barber half dollar specialist. Pop 1; none finer at PCGS. (PCGS # 86540) . Estimated Value $25,000 - 27,000. Categories: Barber Half Dollars
