[ 3288] Lollius Palicanus Silver Denarius (20mm, 4.23 gm), Rome, 45 B.C. Superb! Reference: Lollia 2; B.M.C. 4011; Syd. 960; Craw. 473/1; Sear 86 Diademed head of Libertas r.,LIBERTATIS behind View of the Rostra in the Roman Forum, ornamented by ships' beaks and surmounted by a sella - tribune's bench, PALIKANVS above.. The Rostra was a speaker's platform in the Roman Forum, and was adorned with the beaks of the war galleys (as can be seen between the columns on this coin) captured in the latter part of the 4th century BC from Rome's neighbor, Antium. As an honor and to signify his importance, the speaker was entitled to sit upon a curule chair. Only magistrates of the highest rank (i.e., the consuls, praetors and curile aediles) were granted use of a curule chair; thus, those allowed to speak on the Rostra were only the highest magistrates of Rome.
