ANCIENT COINS. ROMAN. L. Mussidius Longus (42 B.C.), Silver Denarius, 4.00g, 8h. Radiate and draped bust of Sol facing, inclined slightly to right, with flowing hair. Rev. [L MV]SSIDIVS LONGVS , shrine of Venus Cloacina, with two statues behind a balustrade on a platform inscribed CLOACIN (Cr 494/43a; Syd 1094; CRI 189). An unusually good example, well-centred and with virtually complete types, from an old collection and with an outstanding iridescent cabinet tone, good very fine. T he shrine of Venus Cloacina was a small sanctuary in the Roman Forum which honoured the divinity of the sewer of Rome. Sold with an old collector’s ticket. $1,200
