1860. PCGS graded MS-65. CAC Approved. A wonderful lustrous mint gem. First year that the copper nickel cents carried an oak leaf reverse with shield at top. Housed in an Old Green Holder. Pop 160; 46 finer, 37 in 66, 1 in 66+, 8 in 67. (PCGS # 2058) 1860 was a difficult year in America. The "wedges of separation" caused by slavery, and more importantly, the passage of the punitive Morrill Tariff act, split the nation. The crucial point was reached in the presidential election of 1860, in which the Republican candidate, Abraham Lincoln, defeated three opponents, Stephen A. Douglas (Northern Democrat), John C. Breckinridge (Southern Democrat), and John Bell of the Constitutional Union party. Lincoln pledged to support the Morrill Tariff, at gunpoint if necessary, which, as events unfolded, did become necessary. Lincoln's victory was the signal for the secession of South Carolina (Dec. 20, 1860), and that state was followed out of the Union by six other states, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Texas.
