1733,
MEXICO. 8 Reales, 1733-MoMF. Philip V (1700-46). NGC VF Details--Harshly Cleaned.
KM-103; Cal-type-146#776; Gil-M-8-5; FC-3a. Small crown, two mouldings atop pillars. An EXTREMELY RARE variant without dot or stop above the assayer’s letters. As a generalization, the 1733-Mo mintmark with assayers letters MF is the most frequently encountered of the 1733 8 Reales. There are two exceptions, both of which are EXTREMELY RARE and quite underrated. The first being the 1733 large crown which bears that crown from the MX series, that being the coin offered here. The piece offered here is a VERY RARE die mulling struck with the same shield side die used for the “MX” MF no dot 8 Reales. Somewhat of a hybrid that is remarkably RARE and seldom encountered. Pleasing brown tone and quite wholesome for the grade.
Pedigree: From the David Gray Collection. Ex: Ponterio & Associates June 6, 1998.
