1903. NGC graded Proof 64 CAC Approved. A totally brilliant example with some scattered faint hairlines most of which are on the old thick NGC style holder. Only 96 struck. In 1903, the Philadelphia Mint struck fewer than a hundred Proof Eagles for sale to contemporary collectors. As reflected in the present specimen, these coins were struck using the all-brilliant proofing finishes introduced in 1902. The 1903, therefore, is all but unknown with a Cameo finish, and even the few pieces that have been so designated by the major certification services do not have the same degree of field-to-device contrast as on Proof Eagles from the 1890s. In point of fact, the Proof 1903 is a very rare issue in all grades, and regardless of finish. Only 40-50 coins are believed to be known, with the very choice example that we are offering here tied with two score examples (possible duplicate submittals) as a representative example. A gorgeous specimen with attractive color, both sides are at the threshold of Gem level. There is not even a single bothersome contact mark or other blemish, and this is true both in the fields and over the devices. The latter are fully struck, and all areas radiate serene reflectivity. Whether you are a specialist in Proof gold or a collector of high grade Type and specimen coinage, this 1903 Eagle is a piece that is sure to add distinction in your cabinet. Pop 20; 15 finer with 1 in 64*, 7 in 65, 5 in 66, 2 in 67. Estimated Value $17,000 - 18,000. Categories: $10 Liberty/With Motto
