Kingdom of Macedon. Alexander III, the Great, 336-323 BC. Gold Stater (8.49 g) minted at Abydos under Philip III, c. 318/7 BC. Head right of Athena wearing triple-crested helmet decorated with snake. Reverse: Nike standing left, holding wreath and stylis; to left, monogram, star and cornucopiae. Price 1524v; M. 381v. Struck in high relief; lustrous and Superb Extremely Fine. The triple cresting on the side of Athena's helmet is very separate and distinct from the main top crest on this obverse die. It could be a mint signature from Abydos, using her symbol, the griffin. When held a certain way, the extra decoration looks very much like the head right of a griffin with mouth open. Estimated Value $3,000 - 4,000. Categories: Greek Coins
