1858-S $5 Liberty. NGC graded EF-45. Well struck and untoned. Low mintage date as only 18,600 were struck. It is important to realize that such pieces have never been connected with any treasure, and thus such recovered wrecks as the S.S. Central America (which sunk the year before, in 1857), and the S.S. Brother Jonathan (which sunk years later in 1864, and included no example of this issue) are not a factor. The survival of the present piece is a matter of rare chance. It could be that years will pass before a comparable offering. Pop 13; 39 finer (PCGS # 8279) . Estimated Value $1,800 - 1,900. Categories:
