Great Britain. Noble, ND. S.1799; N-1414; Fr-112. Henry VI (First Reign 1422-1461). Annulet issue (1422-1430). London mint. King standing in ship holding sword and shield. Annulet by sword hand. Reverse: Floriate cross extending from central panel containing letter H, crowned leopards in angles. A superb coin, well centered and with an exquisitely detailed and impressive portrait. Very round, with lettering sharp and crisp. Frosty surfaces with original luster. NGC graded MS-63. *This impressive coin was produced in the first few years of the reign. Henry was the only child and heir of his father King Henry V, the warrior King who was made more famous by the works of Shakespeare. He succeeded (in 1422) to the throne, at the tender age of nine months, and a regency council governed the realm until Henry VI was declared of age in 1437. A pious man, he shunned war, and sought to achieve peace with France, marrying the beautiful Margaret of Anjou. The supply of gold dwindled after the early years of Henry's tenure, and gold coins minted after 1426 are especially rare. Nevertheless, the early 'annulet issue' Nobles are among the finest medieval gold coins produced in Europe. Estimated Value $5,500 - 6,000. Categories:
