Attica, Athens, c. 440-404 BC. AR Tetradrachm (17.10 g). Head right of Athena wearing crested helmet ornamented with three olive leaves and palmette decoration. Reverse: Owl standing right, head facing, sprig of olive and crescent behind; to right, ethnic; all within incuse square. Sv. pl. 17, 8; Dewing 1622. The tip of the obverse nose is just off flan. NGC graded Choice XF: Strike 4/5; Surface 5/5. An ethnic is the inscribed name of the city-state issuing the coin and, in fact, guarantees the weight and purity of metal. Estimated Value $350 - 450.
