Julian II, AD 360-363. AE 1 (Majorina) minted at Constantinople. Diademed, cuirassed and draped bust right of Julian II. Reverse: Bull standing right; above, two stars. RIC 162. NGC graded XF: Strike 5/5; Surface 3/5. Usually termed AE 1, a bronze coin of this size is sometimes called a majorina, and is infrequently seen as a silver-washed issue. Here, NGC uses "B" for base/billon (highly debased silver). One of the cataloguer's favorite historical biographies is Julian by Gore Vidal, which is highly recommended for a scholarly, yet entertaining, insight into this fascinating era. Estimated Value $200 - 250. Categories:
