Carthago Nova AE24, Roman head Carthago Nova, Spain. Roman Occupation. AE24 (10.13 g), after 209 BC. Obv. Bare-head (of Scipio Africanus?) left. Rev. Horse standing right; palm tree behind. CNH Class XI, 282; SNG BM Spain 127-128. Rare. Dark patina with earthern highlights. Very fine. There has been much dispute about the identification of the clean-shaved, Roman-style head shown on this issue. Differing substantially from the earlier Carthago Nova issues, this youthful head may that of Scipio Africanus, the young Roman general who captured Carthago Nova in 209 BC and later defeated Hannibal at Zama.
