CHINA. Taiwan. Dollar, ND (ca. 1836). PCGS Genuine--Chopmark, VF Details Secure Holder.

L&M-310; K-7a; cf.WS-0994; Wenchao-pg. 188#204; pg.114,Tseng-type-3C. "Prudence" military ration Dollar or "silver cake". Edge milling of alternating circles and squares, similar to that of a Spanish colonial 8 Reales. For the predominant part of the nineteenth century, Taiwan remained under the control of the Qing court as part of Fukien province. Taiwan saw great civil unrest during the Qing Dynasty, with rebellions and riots occurring on a regular basis. This period evoked the common saying "every three years an uprising; every five years a rebellion". This EXTREMELY RARE military ration dollar was struck in the sixteenth year of Tao Kuang (1836) during one such rebellion. The rebellion was quelled in the 21st year of Tao Kuang (1840) at a total cost of nearly 100,000 Taels. EXTREMELY RARE as most examples have since been melted and no longer exist. An overall pleasing example with original surfaces. Showing only moderate chopmarks which is normal for this issue.
