CHINA. Wu Zhu Coin Mold, ND.

A complete obverse half of coin mold for casting twelve Wu Zhu type coins. This particular type of coin was issued nearly without interruption for about seven centuries until the 6th century A.D. as each successive regime carried on its use. Thus precise dating of the coins, and this mold is difficult and open to discussion. The mold is approximately 23 cm long, with a base width of 7.5 cm, and a tapered end where the molten bronze would be poured about 4.5 cm wide. On the back of the mold are two thick metal tabs for slotting into an anvil or other work station during casting. On one end of the face is a short pin sticking up which would have been slotted through a corresponding hole in the other half of the mold, while two short pins on the other half would fit into two shallow triangular slots at the narrow end of this half. Vibrant green patina over most of the surface, but with excellent definition to the central trough and coin recesses. A handsome and interesting item housed in a plush fitted display case.
