1996,
CHINA. 25 Yuan Bimetallic Pattern, 1996. Unicorn Series.
cf.Fr-B107; cf.KM-797; cf.NPB-22a. EXTREMELY RARE. A hither to unknown and possibly unique pattern for a 1996 25 Yuan bimetallic unicorn. Prepared in the same style as the preceding two years’ issues with a quarter ounce gold central portion and a one eighth ounce silver ring surrounding it. The reverse coin bears the exact same legends and central image as the preceding years except for the 1996 date, the numerals of which are more widely spaced and simple than the 1995 pieces. The obverse central design is that of the issued 1996 25 Yuan Unicorn, the outer ring however bears the same content as the preceding issues but it again has far different writing, particularly the “OZ” and “Ag”. 1996 marked the first year in the Unicorn Series which did not include a bimetallic and this would appear to be the proposed design which was never put into production. This piece has been sent to both PCGS and NGC, neither of which were inclined to condemn or certify it, due to its either its extreme rarity or enigmatic origins. However, after careful study we believe it to be a genuine product of the China Mint which has yet to be published. SOLD AS IS/NO RETURNS.
