L&M-437; Y-74.2; Kann-938; WS-0637 Chang Foundation-pg. 118#53; Wenchao-pg. 414#633 (rarity four stars); Hsu-36; H. Chang-CH16. Three dot type. Attempts were made during the reign of Emperor Kuang Hsu to introduce a standard Tael coinage. The new Tael coinage was intended to circulate alongside the 7 Mace 2 Candareens units. This coinage was met with mixed approval and never gained wide acceptance. Shortly after the death of the emperor, the project was aborted and replaced with attempts towards producing a unified coinage. Allegedly only about 7,000 Pei Yang Taels were struck; however, most never entered circulation and the majority of the mintage was recalled and melted. Today it is considered one of the classic rarities of Chinese numismatics. Light attractive toning.
