Islamic Coins, Abbasid, al-Ma’mun, Silver Dirham, Jund Dimashq 200h, rev ‘umara/Muhammad rasu/allahli’l-khalifa/alimamal-ma’mun/binhumayd?, 2.17g (Lowick 627). Pierced, otherwise about fine and extremely rare, only one example recorded by Lowick. As Miles states in his note on the Dirham of Muhammad b. Bayhas, Dimashq 198h, “The numismatic record …. is valuable elaboration of the somewhat vague accounts in the chronicles …. about Damascus at the turn of the (3rd) century hijri”. Miles was speaking about the series of Dirhams struck by Ibn-Bayhas in Damascus between 198h and 209h. Jund was the title given to a military district. It would appear that for a time during the year 200h, while Ibn-Bayhas held the city of Damascus, his power was being challenged elsewhere by the otherwise unknown ‘Umara. The name ‘Umara is clear on this coin, but it appears to be missing or illegible on Lowick’s piece and the name of his father cannot be read on either coin with any degree of certainty. £500-600
