Q. Sicinius and C. Coponius, moneyers 49 BC. AR Denarius. Diademed head right of Apollo. Reverse: Club upright, on which hangs lion's skin with head in profile; to left, arrow; to right, bow. Sear 413; Sicinia 1; Cr. 444/1a. Struck slightly off-center, lustrous and beautifully toned. Extremely Fine. On the outbreak of the civil war, both moneyers left Rome and joined the forces of Pompey in Greece, Coponius being in command of the Rhodian fleet. The coins of Sicinius were struck in Rome, but the joint issues of Sicinius and Coponius are generally assigned to Asia Minor. This isue was struck to support Coponius' fleet and, to justify this action, the formula S.C. is added to make it appear as under senatorial authority. Estimated Value $400 - 500.
