As originally envisioned, the mint would redo the entire spectrum of American coinage from the lowly bronze one-cent piece through the noble golden double eagle. In correspondence, Saint-Gaudens felt the 1857 Flying Eagle cent was the finest motif found on any American coin, which is probably the reason he chose a similar eagle for his High Relief $20 gold reverse.
