WORLD COINS. INDIA. Mughal. Shah Alam II (or Bedar Bakht) (AH 1173-1221 / 1759-1806 AD). Gold Mohur, Dar al-Khilafat Shahjahanabad , [1]202h, RY 29. AV, 10.79g (cf KM 720). Extremely fine, lustrous. Rare in such high grade. The year 1788 (AH 1202) was a year of turmoil for the Mughal Empire. Shah Alam II was deposed and blinded by the Rohilla chieftain Ghulam Qadir on 27 Shawwal 1202 and Bedar Bakht was placed on the throne. This was the 29th year of Shah Alam II. It cannot be said with certainty whether the coin offered here was struck during the first part of the year when Shah Alam II was ruling or it was minted on the authority of Bedar Bakht in the latter half of 1202, but struck in the name of Shah Alam II. Either attribution is possible. $3,500
