CALIGULA with DIVUS AUGUSTUS: 37-41 A.D.
Silver Denarius  (28mm, 3.58 gm.) Rome, 37-38 A.D. Superb and very rare.
Reference:  RIC 16. RSC 2. BMC  17. BN 21 (Lugdunum). MIR 16-3/8.
C CAESAR AVG GERM P M TR POT, laureate head of Caligula right.
DIVVS AVG PATER PATRIAE, radiate head of Augustus right.

Despite being perhaps the worst of all Roman emperors, Caligula's coinage  is interesting and attractive. As he had few, if any, real accomplishments to  tout, his reverse types place great stress on his blue-blooded lineage. His  detailed portrait on this well-struck and denarius seems to hint at his cruel,  capricious nature, while the reverse depicts his great-grandfather, Augustus.
