Reverse: Persian legend with titles of Maharaja Sawai Mangal Singh and date (1880) within inner circle. Sprays at sides, english legend around. Legend: ONE RUPEE / ALWAR STATE
In 1803 the State of Alwar signed a treaty with the East India Company. During the reign of Mangal Singh Prabhakar Bahadur (Maharaja of Alwar 1874-1892) arrangements were made with the East India Company for the use of their mint at Calcutta of the same weight and assay as the Imperial rupee, but in the name of Alwar. The issues began in 1877 and ended in 1891.
Maharaja Mangal Singh Prabhakar was the 6th Maharaja of Alwar (1874/1892) born 1859, adopted from Thikana Thana, installed upon the gaddi on 14 December 1874, in preference to Kunwar Lakhdir Singh of Bijwar, Maharaja [cr.1889], G.C.S.I., married (amongst others), (a) 1877, the second daughter of Maharaja Prithvi Singhji of Kishangarh, married (b), 1878, a daughter of Raja Bhairon Singhji of Ratlam, and had issue. Maharaja Mangal Singh was given death sentence by British.
