Balbus strikes as praetor by special decree of the Senate (senatus consulto) and the type anticipates the success of the anti-Sullan cause, a hope which was to be dashed in the battle of the Colline Gate. Denarii with serrated edges had not been struck for more than two decades, but henseforth were to become common down to the mid -60s BC.
