PERU. 2 Peso Pattern in Gold, 1855-MB. Philadelphia Mint. NGC PROOF-63.

The Only 1855 Pattern 2 Pesos Known in Private Hands

KM-Pn13; G&S-804. The transition to decimal coinage began in 1858 and was completed by the early 1860's. This EXTREMELY RARE piece represents a proposed pattern for the first decimal coinage of Peru. One of only six pieces struck, and the first to be struck at the Philadelphia mint for a foreign country. Only two examples are known to exist today, of which this is the only one in private hands. The second known example is part of the national coin collection, residing in the Smithsonian Institute. Very attractive with an impeccable pedigree. Of the utmost rarity and importance.

Pedigree: Ex: John J. Pittman Collection, David Akers, August 1999, lot 3666; Ex: The Palace Collection, Sotheby's, February-March, 1954, part of lot 162.
