1652 Massachusetts Pine Tree Shilling Noe-2 on Jumbo Planchet. PCGS graded MS-61. No Pellets at Trunk. Choice glossy light to medium steel gray and silver. Sharply and evenly struck on a thin "Jumbo" planchet. The planchet is not round, more of a wide oval-shape, and that resulted in the tops of a few letters being off the planchet while other places have extra planchet metal outside the border beads. Otherwise the only defect is a small planchet fissure at the border beads between the A & S in MASATHVSETS. The Oak Tree has unusually straight limbs and the Noe-2 is sometimes called "The Straight Tree" variety. A very attractive example of the variety, and the seldom-seen "Jumbo" planchet is a bonus. Weight 70.4 grains as listed on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; 2 finer in 62 at PCGS. Estimated Value $20,000-UP. Ex Richard Picker Collection-Picker Estate, Stack's 5/1/1991:15-Hain Family Collection, Stack's 1/15/2002:96. Categories: Colonials
