VERY RARE Isabella II Countermarked Colombian 8 Escudos
Fr-A3; KM-141.1; Basso-43 (for countermark type); cf.PNM#6-216; cf.PNM#16-197; Cacho-Type III; Lopez-Chavez Yriarte-Type IV group A; Gil-Crown variety 5-4-1-II (1835). Type VI countermark crowned Y.II. within circle. On an 1832-BOGOTARS Colombia 8 Escudos. A VERY RARE denomination that is highly sought after by Philippines numismatists and world collectors alike. Famed Philippines numismatist Aldo P. Basso, author of "Coins, Medals and Tokens of the Philippines"; stated "Countermarked gold coins must be placed at the top of the list". All countermarked gold coins of the Philippines should be considered RARE. The two escudos is EXTREMELY RARE with only a few examples (approximately 3) known to exist, and the 1 Escudo is believed to be unique. Due to their rarity, many collectors consider the minor gold coins "uncollectible", with their only hope of a actually acquiring a countermarked Philippines gold coin being that of an 8 Escudos. Rarely do they appear at auction and even Rarer is it to find more than one example represented in a collection. Countermark well struck and deeply applied. Light even wear with a few trivial marks on obverse, satiny surfaces in the protected areas with good overall details. A wholesome and appealing example that would make a fine addition to any collection. Countermark AU Details, host coin
