Tied for Finest Certified Chihli Province "Pei Yang" Tael

L&M-438; Kann-938a; Y-74.1; Chang Foundation-pg. 116#52; Wenchao-pg. 415#634; cf.WS-0638. EXTREMELY RARE. During the reign of Emperor Kuang Hsu, attempts were made to introduce a standard Tael coinage into circulation alongside the 7 Mace 2 Candareens units, the coinage was met with mixed approval. Having never gained wide acceptance this coinage experiment was aborted after the death of the emperor in 1908. Shortly after this project was replaced with attempts at producing a unified coinage, which was again met with resistance and was not successful at establishing a long lasting unified system. Allegedly about 7,000 Pei Yang Taels were initially struck, however most never entered circulation. A majority of the mintage was recalled and melted, accounting for its rarity today. Of the two major varieties of Chihli Taels, this is the type with three tiny dots positioned in a straight line across the fiery pearl. Light even iridescent toning with blue, yellow and golden hues across the entire surface. Subdued luster beneath. One is hard pressed to find any detracting surface marks or evidence of contact, which is all the more impressive given the coin's size and expansive open fields. A beautiful coin and one of the top rarities of all provincial issues. This piece is used as a plate example in "Top Chinese Coins" by Chou, Guth and Smith. Tied with one other piece in this grade for the finest certified.
