Iulia Domna Assarion, Tegea Iulia Domna (193-217 AD). Assarion (25 mm, 6.30 g), Tegea, Arcadia. Obv. IOYΛIA ΔOMNA CEBA, draped bust right. Rev. TEΓEATΩN, Atalanta standing right, holding spear with both hands and fighting Kalydonian Boar standing to left beneath tree. NCP V XX; BCD Peloponnesos 1754 (same dies, sold for 1600 CHF). Very rare and an issue of great mythological interest. Good fine. From the BCD Collection, ex Münzenauktion Essen 72 (1996), 403. Atalanta was abandoned as a child near Kalydon by her father Iasos because he had wished for a male heir. She was fed and raised by a bear and grew up to become the fastest runner of Greece and a famous huntress. She joined Ankaios and Kepheos of Tegea - both of which initially refuse to work together with a woman - in the hunt for the Kalydonian boar as shown on the reverse of this coin. A representation of Atalanta was on the Pediment of the temple of Athena Alea at Tegea.
