Mint Year: 1825 Reference: Pridmore 130, Lyall 147.    Condition: Numerous circulation-marks and some wear, otherwise VF. Denominations: Penny  Token - issued to Facilitate Trade in the British Colonies Material: Copper Diameter: 28mm Weight: 9.52gm

Obverse: Bust of (George IV?) left. Legend: BRITISH COLONIES

Reverse: Togate Britannia seated on a package of trade goods and holding spray in right hand. Date (1825) below. Legend: TO FACILITATE TRADE

Jamaica was an English colony from 1655 (when it was captured by the English from Spain) or 1670 (when Spain formally ceded Jamaica to the English), and a British Colony from 1707 until 1962, when it became independent. Jamaica became a Crown colony in 1866.
