1831 N-12 R1. PCGS graded MS-64 Red & Brown. Large Letters Reverse. Frosty mint red fading to steel brown, about 25% of the red remaining on both sides. No spots or stains, only a few very light contact marks from gem status. The notable marks are a collection of very light vertical nicks in the field between the tip of the nose and star 3. Terminal die state with a huge cud break that engulfs all but the upper point of star 13 and consumes the lower 3 points of star 12 (including the tip of the lower left point of that star, Newcomb's #12/3). In addition, there is a double profile (from die bounce) on the front edge of the coronet, browlock, and from the lips to the base of the neck with additional doubling on stars 1-6, 8-11, and on all 4 digits of the date. A spectacular example of the terminal state of this variety. Called MS65 and tied for CC#1 overall in the Noyes census, his photo #20973. Bland says MS63 and tied for CC#1 overall. Both census lists show this piece as the finest of the terminal state by a good margin. Our grade is MS64. A truly beautiful example of a fantastic die state; a top-drawer specimen for the finest collection. The attribution and Naftzger provenance are noted on the PCGS label and the Naftzger collection envelope is included. PCGS population 1; 1 finer in 65RB. Estimated Value $10,000-UP. Ex Stack's OTC-C. Douglas Smith 1/76-Jerry A. Bobbe 6/79-R. E. Naftzger, Jr., McCawley & Grellman Auctions/Goldberg's 2/1/2009:269. Categories: Flowing Hair Cents
