2 Cent    (sold for $2200.0)

1865. PCGS graded MS-65 Red. CAC Approved. Housed in an Old Green Holder. A highly lustrous Gem that has rich coppery to golden patina and a razor sharp strike. Struck with mathematical care by the dies, in other words. Pop 189; 41 finer, 40 in 66, 1 in 67. (PCGS # 3584) Note: On Dec. 8, 1863, Director James Pollock wrote to Salmon P. Chase (Lincoln's Secretary of Treasury), recommending a 2c piece in French bronze (the alloy earlier chosen for the new cents). Pollock submitted for Chase's approval samples of two designs, one with a Washington head, the other with shield and arrows in saltire (similar to that adopted), preferring the latter -- probably because it was in lower relief. Secretary Chase concurred, but stipulated that the motto GOD OUR TRUST be changed to IN GOD WE TRUST. This wording was evidently influenced by the motto of Chase's alma mater, Brown University, IN DEO SPERAMUS, 'In God we hope.' Pollock's proposal was written into the pending Mint Bill, which became law April 22, 1864. Estimated Value $2,000 - 2,200 Categories: Two Cent Pieces
